PC-Bug Fixer Opinion. - Note on ADSL and Overview of ISP Broadband Services.
Recommend ADSL - Broadband of choice for the future.
I say this with tong in cheek as the Telstra ADSL service has been plagued with difficulties due to their Server Software and Equipment. Other Broadband ADSL Services mentioned, have their own Server Software and Equipment.
The reason however, that I recommend ADSL is because ADSL is the world wide protocol of choice and as such will be where all the R & D will be focused in the future with the added benefits of innovation and improvements and improvements of speed and reliability. There is also a greater understanding among IT graduates and professionals as well as equipment suppliers for ADSL whereas Cable is a 'closed' industry and will become increasingly more so. Cable suffers from the problem of a fixed sized pipe through which you can send a limited amount of data whereas the ADSL connection expands to the amount of traffic required and does not suffer the degradation of speed which cable does. Cable carriers of course make the reverse claim.
The ADSL connection to a customers location is also a dedicated phone line connected directly to the local Telephone ADSL Enabled Exchange and is not shared with any other user.
Our experience with cable is that the speed of data, both upload and download, suffers and is very noticeable at peak usage times (when the Kids come home from School at 4:30pm and when everyone turns the cable TV on) as the co-axial cable signal transmission is a shared service. In some cases complaints have been made by users who compare this late evening service to the level of their 56K connection in terms of performance. Also ADSL is more widely spread with connections now available in most locations. Speed performance does degrade generally at peak Internet usage (traffic) times on all broadband services.
It must be realized and understood that there are only 2 Broadband Signal Carriers, Telstra and Optus.
1. Optus is a stand alone carrier (no agents or sub-carriers) and deals with Cable for Home Users, including Home Small Business (Residential ONLY) - Optus ADSL Business customers are connected via Telstra's phone lines (copper wire) and ADSL Exchange Equipment to their (Optus) Computer Equipment Servers. Optus Cable has been to date, the most reliable Broadband "Cable" service.
2. Telstra is also a stand alone carrier and deals with both Broadband ADSL and Cable for Home, Small Business and Corporate users. Telstra have their own Computer Equipment Servers.
2a. Telstra, since the introduction of their ADSL in 2000, has not been the most reliable Telstra service which would include their Cable service. However this has greatly changed in the last 9 month (since July 2002) and the introduction of major changes in Customer Quality Guarantees and upgrading of their equipment.
I would have to add, that the "Business Ethics" of Telstra's Broadband Services are, I believe, in the forefront of this type. Hotkey is another. Whereas the Telstra Phone Line Rental is still in the "Dark Ages."
A. The Broadband connection plans for Home and Business users are the same and no unfair premium is imposed on the use of Broadband equipment.
B. Obviously the Broadband Cable or ADSL usage volume is where the Customer pays extra. This I believe is just and fair and where the Company providing the service gets the additional income.
C. However, with ADSL connections (phone line - copper wire) the actual line rental is charged in addition to the respective monthly Plan Fee. This does not occur with a cable line, the plan fee for cable is all-inclusive. If a phone line exists and it is NOT on a PABX or Rotary Telephone Systems, no additional line is required and the existing line can be used for both Phone and ADSL services.(an existing dedicated Fax lines can also be used) Cable -v- ADSL service and cost factors should be closely scrutinised by the Customer.
D. Additionally, there is a premium on the "copper wire - phone line" if it is used for a Business. My question has always been, "Does the copper wire wear out faster if I am a Business User?" the answer obviously is that, "it does not." So why now does a Business pay extra for the copper wire line rental? - This is where the Marketing and Sales people come in with telling you about the 'Extra and Higher Priority' and 'Faster than a speeding bullet' and 'Able to leap tall buildings' ploy, that is supposed to exist - "bull."
E. "THINK ABOUT IT!" The same copper wire, running through the same Telephone Exchange can be had at a cheaper rate from another Telephone company - (Hello, Hello, anyone home.) - is just another issue relating to cost, which I believe to be questionable.
F. Go and do your homework!
2b. Telstra allows other Broadband ADSL ISP Services to utilize the Phone Lines and Exchange Equipment.
3. ALL (most) other Broadband ADSL ISP Services use the Telstra phone lines and exchange equipment to carry the broadband signals to their Computer Equipment Servers.
3a. Where these ISP's use their own Server Equipment, it has proven to vastly improve the reliability of the Broadband ADSL service provided by them.
By suggesting that ADSL is recommended for the future, I am also recommending current alternatives based on the performance reliability and price of Broadband ADSL -v- Cable. These are then given in the order in which the text is numbered in this document, " ADSL / Broadband Communication Pricing and Plans.
