Quick Reference Diary Notes on Bugs and Fixes.

September 10, 2005 - I thought I might last a full year without adding notes to this section, but alas I cannot resist and make the following observations and comments.

There is in reality nothing new it's the same old problems with a newer twist, just read the old notes and look at the new? Fixes for the last 10 month. The IE (Internet Explorer) is still the holiest piece of software that Microsoft has produced, and must be by now on the Vatican list to be canonised.

As for any other Bugs and Fixes, like the soap operas, this is episode ten thousand six hundred fifty five and they still have not fixed the errors in their codes. No need to wonder why, as while you continue to be gullible and pay to fix their problems, why should they fix them when they can generate extra income in the service and help desk department!

On the same subject of codes and fixing the "Operating Systems" codes to be akin to UNIX or Linux in order to eliminate the "Virus" and other plagues that invest the Microsoft Operating Systems, what do they do? They hop on the band wagon and write their own Anti-Virus and Ant-Spam programs to get their share of the money available in this vulgar and obvious "Computer Protection Racket" which is now generating "$$$ Billions of Dollars $$$". Makes the Mafia look like a Kindergarten Club.

Is there anything ethical in this IT Industry? Like a software publisher that's not trying to rip you off? You may well ask, and when you find one please let me know! It seems that they all exploit and extort every "cent" they can to pay larger dividends to their "Shareholders" and the attitude is one of "The customer is a by-product of our business." Note that when you phone the "Help Desk" of most Software Publisher or other Computer related services, you only speak to an "Outsourced Support Service" and not the Publishers directly. In plain English, "They aught to hide behind or under anything, like a "Rock", as what they do by releasing and selling faulty software, is vile and corrupt and in any other Industry would be classes as extortion and a crime under the consumer laws.

The worst atrocities that are perpetrated upon Humanity are not the natural disasters like Tsunamis, Floods, Bush Fires or Earthquakes, it is the Human Race "Defecating" on each other!" and the new "Corporate gods" that they blindly follow in order to keep their jobs without regard to any personal pride or ethical conduct. Worst of all, they believe (have been brainwashed) that the vile and manipulative "Company Policies" that the follow, are in accord with consumer laws and trade practices in their country of origan when common sense will tell you that, "they are NOT". Just remember that the "Company Name" is not the anus rectus that is doing this, it is the miserable excuse of a human being like the CEO or other executive of the company that is doing this! We, by our own actions have destroyed the "Promised Land".

So, what else is not new? - "You Don't" or did not like what I said, then prove me wrong!

November 11, 2004 - Looks imminent that I will change to Mozilla Firefox v1.0 (Need to fix some Java bugs 1st) and change to another e-mail program like Eudora or Lotus Notes.

October 13 - It has gotten to the stage where I do not give a "Continental Knackwurst" as to the updates for IE 6.x The number of holes make this so Holier that it will be "Canonized" as the Browser that was the most flawed piece of software that Microsoft has produced.
More Updates for Internet Explorer 6.x This one effects IE down to v5.1 - That means you should download the respective patch for your IE version on any Windows Platform, including 95b

September 23 - Bit late to-day updating the site. NAV and Windows Update.
Root Certificates Update - (Posted Date: September 20, 2004) - Download size: 210 KB
Root Certificates Update: This item updates the list root certificates on your computer to the latest list that is accepted by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft Root Certificate Program. Adding additional root certificates to your computer enables a greater range of security enhanced Web browsing, encrypted e-mail, and security enhanced code delivery applications to work seamlessly. This update includes root certificates from Verisign, Thawte, and Post.Trust in Ireland.

System Requirements - This update applies to the following operating systems:
Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition - Windows Millennium Edition
Windows NT® 4.0 running Service Pack 6a
Windows 2000 running Service Pack 2 - running Service Pack 3 and running Service Pack 4
How to use: You don't need to do anything after installing this update.
How to uninstall: Uninstall is not available for Root Certificate Updates. Tends to defeat the purpose of installing them in the 1st place.

September 19 - Microsoft: Update for Windows XP Service Pack 2 KB884020
Programs that connect to IP addresses that are in the loopback address range may not work as you expect in Windows XP Service Pack 2
The symptoms are simular to that of the "hosts" file corruption. Although simular, they are separate issues, so don't confuse them!
SYMPTOMS; On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), programs that connect to IP addresses that are in the loopback address range may not work as you expect. For example, you may receive an error message that says that you cannot establish a connection.
CAUSE; This problem occurs if the program connects to a loopback address other than 127.0.0.1. Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) prevents connections to all IP addresses that are in the loopback address range except for 127.0.0.1.
This update helps resolve an issue on computers running Windows XP Service Pack 2. Programs that connect to IP addresses in the loopback address range may not work as expected and you may receive an error message indicating you cannot establish. Check this out at Read about KB884020 re SP2

August 17 - Do not be in too much of a hurry to load Windows XP SP2 "Should you upgrade?"
The latest on SP2 Also In WoodysWatch.
WARNING - Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Office (XP) 2002 and read Item 3. OFFICE XP - SERVICE PACK 3
If there were users that still trusted MS, I doubt that they will after this stuff up.
Upgraded 2003 (from 2002 to 2003) installations still show SP3 for (XP)2002 version and fails to install
- obviously it was not intended for this and the update SP3 report in upgraded 2003, is an error which still after 24 weeks (= 6 month) has not been fixed.
Read the latest news in 1. Secret 'Feature/Bug' in Office XP SP3 In WoodysWatch.

August 15 - Take care in v5 of Windows Update as it will install "Single installation: Windows XP Service Pack 2, (Release Candidate 2)" in the "Express Install (Recommended): High Priority Updates for Your Computer" and in the "Custom Install: High Priority and Optional Updates for Your Computer"
At this stage this XP SP2 (Release Candidate 2) update we do NOT Recommend. It also is 100Mb in size and will be most difficult on a 56K modem speed connection. The idea that an update of this size (100Mb) is posted without warnings, I consider to be plain stupidity on MS's part. Latest size is 75Mb, still too large for a 56K Modem however you can order a free CD with SP2..gif Order your Free Windows Xp SP2 CD
Most likely you will get this on your favorite Magazine CD next month. Most will have this in their September 2004 issues.

IMPORTANT: - Information WANTED.
Microsoft Outlook still sends "Read Receipts" even if disabled in the Options on your PC.
Does anyone know the cause of this error, or most importantly, How to stop ALL Read Receipts being sent?
Known issue was - Deleted Items Still Generate a Read Receipt Even If the "Never Send a Response" Option Is Selected (Q304848)
The original reference was Q304848 for OL2002. For some reason this article has vanished.
This error, of still sending read receipts occurs in all of the Microsoft Outlook e-mail programs from MS Outlook 98, 2000, 2002 and 2003.
I tend to think that this is a hole in our PC security and Microsoft has deliberately left this error un-resolved.
I would also tend to think that this is un-lawful, in that this is extracting information from our PC system without our consent and must therefore contravene the Constitution in the USA and Privacy Laws in other Countries.
Other known reference to similar problem is in Q324636

Any information on this subject will be appreciated. Please send me an e-Mail .gif Email Me! Thanks.
Microsoft does NOT have a fix for this error. - It's on the "Wish List"

Previously posted information in regard to Microsoft Security and Update issues.

AU 03 Sep 2004 - Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB867460)
Windows 2000 and XP error: Running Windows Update in w2k and XP will detect and show 2 available updates for Net Framework. 1st is the "Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1" and 2nd it will show the update for "Microsoft.NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3" This I am advised is an error and the 1.0 sp3 update should be Removed ->
DON'T do It, ref to "Other Issues: The XP SP2 Cyclone!"

These errors from previous experience are synonymous with errors on the Windows Update Server. If you are also having problems, phone MS Support at your location.
Downloads in w2k OK, Installation in w2k is slow and Failed.

Win 98se notes: Installation of this latest sp1 in Windows 98se has no major problems, although on some systems it will hang after the re start option window.
Download and Installation is OK.

Other observations: If you look at the installed folders, you will note that the "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705 - folder (v1.0) remains on the system in Windows ME, 98se, w2k and XP - I wonder why?

.gif .gif

Other Issues: The XP SP2 Cyclone!
The Update for Microsoft.NET Framework 1.0 SP3 showing up at the time we run Windows Update and also get the Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1, Only occurs on W2K and XP systems where they originally had Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 installed and subsequently have (had) been progressively updated via Windows Update to v1.1.
These previous version updates showing up, are synonymous to the same type of update errors that we experienced with the MDAC updates which plagued us from v2.1 to v2.8. and others. These should not occur if the progressive updates had been correctly implemented by the relevent newer updates.

The inter-relationship to MDAC and ODBC updates which suffer from the same update errors ie. wanting to or showing previous version updates to install, are of concern.
In W2K by following MS's Help Desk advice to 'remove" the v1.0 sp3 update from the list has fouled the system as after running for more than 2+ hours it failed to complete and now refuses to update to any service pack. Attempts to un-install also fail and I now have a major job on my hands to fix this stuff-up. I will keep you posted as to the fix for this.
In XP and the NET Framework issue, I attempted to un-install v1.0 (v1.0.3705) to see if this would resolve the Update duplication. This caused major problems on my Sys3 PC and would not complete and subsequently would not un-install any of the NET Framework on this PC. With this lesson, on Sys5 I first un-installed XP SP2 and then un-installed v1.1 (v1.1.4322) and the old Hotfix - then un-installed v1.0 without any problems.
Re-installing Net Framework v1.1 only caused some minor problems - Internal Error 2908 and Error 1935 and the "closed prematurely" - which where resolved by renaming the " mscoree.dll " to ' mscoree.dl_ '. This file is located in the windir%\system32\mscoree.dll, - Installing Net Framework v1.1 after re-naming this file went without a hitch, as did the update to v1.1 sp1 without showing the old v1.0 sp3 update.

More XP SP 2 problems. - XP Pro with service pack 2 installed.
I attempted to update the TweakUI v2.00.0.0 on the system to v2.10.0.0 by running the latest .exe downloaded from MS - IT FAILED to install.

Overview on Microsoft .NET Framework v1.1 sp1:
The primary focus of Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is improved security. In addition, the service pack includes roll-ups of all reported customer issues found after the release of the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1. Of particular note, SP1 provides better support for consuming WSDL documents, Data Execution prevention and protection from security issues such as buffer overruns.
SP1 also provides support for Windows XP Service Pack 2 to provide a safer, more reliable experience for customers using Windows XP.

Microsoft Releases Four Bulletin Revisions! A Strainer or Sieve looks like having fewer holes.
In April, Microsoft sent out a bulletin regarding four major revisions. These revisions affect many different OS's and other software from Microsoft which could leave you vulnerable to malicious attacks if not downloaded and installed on your PC. Three of the four are "critical" while the last one is an "Important" update. Microsoft recommends that all affected users update their systems immediately by going to the Microsoft update page or to the link below:

I have also observed that the bugs in Windows update are on the increase. Driver updates are not reliable any more. I was blatantly informed by several Manufacturers quote,

Problems relating to ODBC and MDAC 2.8 in XP SP2
.gif - I have had problems installing MS Office 2003 after 1st installing XP SP2.
In that, during the installation the "error 1919. Error configuring ODBC data source" error when you run the Setup program for Office 2003 - appears (Knowledge Base Article = KB818954) The fixes in this article are obviously Pre XP SP 2 and do not relate to or will work if XP SP 2 has been installed.
Fix "Method 1: Install MDAC 2.8" fails as it is already incorporated into XP SP2.
Fix Method 2: Reset the Registry Keys by Using the Mdac.inf File - Seems to do nothing in XP SP2 or asks for the (*) XP Professional SP 2 CD.
Fix method 2 - Step 1 "Modify the Registry Keys" does not fix the problem and seems to have no effect at all.
Fix method 2 - Step 2 "Install Mdac.inf" fails as it requests the "Windows XP Professional SP2" CD which does not exist (*)( has not yet been released in AU - we only have XP Pro SP1)
Fix "Method 3: Importing the Registry Keys from Another Computer on the Network) and or from any other computer, work up to XP SP1 - but does NOT fix the error message appearing if you have XP SP2 installed 1st.
The way I solved this bug, was to Un-Install XP SP2, after it re-boots by itself I had to fixing minor error messages, which after the 2nd re-boot did not re-occur.
Then, 1. I re-installed MDAC 2.8 and re-booted to make sure that it was initialized. 2. Installed MS Office 2003 and no installation errors appeared and again re-booted to initialize the Office installation. 3. Installed XP SP 2 again and it appears to now be all working fine !?!

New Software Update: MDAC 2.8 Available (XP SP1 ONLY)
## Updates fix prior to XP SP2 - another fix on - MDAC 2.8 for Win XP, 2K and Win 2003 Server
Just run "Windows Update in these OS's and it will pick the update paches if you need them.
Previous Update for MDAC 2.8
Microsoft has released Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.8. The MDAC 2.8 redistributable installer installs the same Data Access core components as Microsoft Windows 2003 Server. Please note that this release does not include Microsoft Jet, the Microsoft Jet OLE DB Provider, the Desktop Database Drivers ODBC Driver, or the Visual FoxPro ODBC Driver.
Note: Installation of this patch will require you to restart your computer.
After Installing v2.8 on a Win ME or '98 System, Windows Critical Update will attempt to re-install MDAC 2.1 refrence - MS02-065 (Q329414) DO NOT ALLOW Windows Update TO INSTALL 2.1 OVER 2.8
I have been in contact with Microsoft on this issue (error on MS Update Server) and am waiting on fix. (MS/PCBF file ref: 15F) Ref previous notes - This has been fixed.

Current status - It seems to have been fixed, re-install of v2.1 does not appear any more.

Nero Burning ROM (Ahead Software)
From Germany = Premium-, from USA = Ultra-Edition !!
Nero Burning ROM (Ahead Software) is at version 7.5.9.0 and older is at v6.6.1.4* - InCD is at (7x) = ver: 5.5.0.11 and (6x) = ver: 4.3.23.2
*IN-CD for (7x) v5.1.0.15 is giving installation and other system freeze problems in Windows some XP, i.e. it stops the AutoPlay from working correctly and refuses to Map folders and files when using Windows Explorer or attempts to use My Computer. The system freezes and needs re-boot by switching Power Off. If CD's are left in drive(s) then Windows Explorer and My Computer will map folders and files, however when CD's are removed the system reverts back to error and freeze state.
Other (6x) = Nero MIX v1.4.0.35 and Media Player are at v1.4.0.35b* - NeroVision Express 3 at v3.1.0.25
Nero ShowTime at v2.0.1.9 and Nero Recode at v2.2.6.17b
Nero product version availability can be checked via the "Nero StartSmart" (Ver 6 only function) and clicking on the red "Nero" button, in which your 'Installed versions' are shown and 'Latest available versions' with the ability to download the new version(s) by clicking on the arrow icon at the end of the item line. Individual Nero software is then downloaded from the "Content of Package Nero 6" section of the page and selecting the required item from the Jigsaw Puzzle "Download" button. - NeroMIX is downloaded independently from the "Demo and Update NeroMIX"
Caution is advised when attempting to use Nero Version 6 and InCD Version 4.x in any Windows Operating Systems. Particularly InCD version 4.x (x being any of the version 4 releases), as we have found that some CD-RW Drives are incompatible with any InCD version 4.x.
Briefly, InCD 4.x, after Windows 98 starts the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) comes up with following error message:
"An exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C004D681 in VxD VFAT(01) + 0000B8ED. This was called from 0028:C1831A60 in VxD Voltrack(04) + 00000430. It may be possible to continue normally."
Don't bother, it won't, as this is a Hardware-Firmware incompatibility issue.
We therefore advise that the last known working version of InCD that is compatible with your CD-RW should be available in the event that the attempt to install the latest InCD 4.x.x.x fails, i.e. The software fails to load as part of the "Nero StartSmart" utility and the software fails to perform the required tasks such as CD-RW CD formatting etc.
Warning - v4.x.x.x is causing problems on Win98 - Scandisk loops as does Norton Disk Doctor on C:\
The versions of InCD 4.2.9.1 and later, have fixed the problems with "some" older CD-RW's.

InCD v4.2.9.1 or later -> 4.3.0.5 do not work in some Win 98 and 98se environments. It is however still Hardware-Firmware dependent, meaning that not all CD-RW hardware is compatible with this software.
.gif Latest attempt on my Sys3-win98se to install InCD 4.3.0.5 (DON'T TRY) 1st succeeded then FAILED - BUT did not last more than 6 hours, FAILED with VxD Voltrack error message when I tried to read and format a CD-RW. System boot also corrupted Registry and Crashed the 98 partition, and all that after 1. un-installing - 2. Cleaning folders - 3. Manually removing Registry entries for InCD ONLY - 4. Re-booting - 5. Deleting temp files - 6. Installing InCD 4305 - so, still does not work on 1 Of my win98 OS's.
Nero 6 Ultra Edition has no problem known to me under Win 98 (9x) and will work with older versions of InCD such as v3.5.2.40 (latest of the v3.x)

>> Hardware - Driver Updates
nVidia GeForce Drivers are at Version 9371 (XP-2k) 02 Nov 2006 and ver:8198 (win98-ME) Released 21 Dec 05
Click here to .gif GoTo nVidia Download Page.

NB: Latest versions work in both 98se XP OS's - used driver update method, not un/ and re-install !!
NB: (Note) Download file is self extracting zip file. Once extracted, DO NOT use 'Setup'.
Drivers are updated via "Update Driver" for the "Display Adapters" in Device Manager. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then ask someone who does.

Windows XP, does NOT correctly identifying the v56.72 or the new Version: 66.93, etc. Releases WHQL Certified driver.
Same old problem when Windows Update attempted to re-install the Oct. 06 2003 v52.16 driver over v53.03 and later up to the latest 66.94
Do NOT use the Windows Update Driver dated Oct. 06 2003 if you installed the 56.72 or newer up to the 66.94 drivers Release Date: Dec 16, 2004 WHQL Certified driver.
It appears that we wait again for MS to updated their certification of the v66.93 driver for XP. "Hide this update" is not an option, it's sweeping it under the carpet.
### The old problem was fixed in Windows 2000 and XP with the release fix on 04 October 2003 (MS/PCBF file ref: Q39) of the Official "Nvidia Corporation - Video" NVIDIA display software update released on July 28 2003. - Download size: 12.2 MB, 13 minutes. It has not worked since this date, 28 July 2003.

Old UPDATE Notice from Microsoft - Driver Issue.
Hi Rodger, I have managed to reproduce the issue you are experiencing and has forwarded the issue to the Windows update team. Unfortunately I do not have a time frame as to when this issue will be resolved as the site is managed and updated in the US. Windows Update V5 will be released and active early August. V5 will be using new controls and it would be very unlikely that this issue will be a problem in V5. I will test this issue as soon as the V5 Windows Update Site goes live. Kind Regards MTS PM.
The problem persists in both v4 and v5 of Windows Update. No Driver update notification occured in Win ME or 98 and a manual update is required by the user.
Windows 95b requires un-install (revert to VGA) then re-install new nVidia via "Setup"
This worked well up to v6.14.10.4523 - did not work for v53.04 + - suggest you keep v45.23
